Peru: An important market for Canadian barley exports
Peru is an important market for Canadian wheat (including durum), dry pea, barley and lentil exports.
In Peru, barley consumption is not confined to beer production or feed use. Barley food products are increasingly appearing in Perus urban supermarkets. Barley is being pearled, chopped into small pieces, and cooked, but consumers are also adapting new and innovative recipes from Northern Europe and Japan. In addition to the nutritional benefits of barley, the use of barley in human diets reduces Perus reliance on more expensive wheat imports.
For 2006-2007, barley production is estimated at 0.2 Mt, unchanged from 2005-2006. For 2006-2007, imports are forecast at 0.1 Mt, also unchanged from the previous year.
The majority of barley imports are generally malting quality.
For 2007-2008, barley production is forecast at 0.2 Mt, unchanged from past years. For 2007-2008, imports are forecast at 0.1 Mt, also unchanged from the previous year. As in previous years, about 0.2 Mt, or 58%, of Perus available barley supply is expected to be consumed as human food.
